Room 218 (Bamburi Beach Hotel)

If Goliath had chosen to vacation at Bamburi Beach Hotel, he would need two hundred and fifty mini soaps they offer to lather his right leg. He would need another 250 for his left one. But the mini soaps notwithstanding, Bamburi Beach Hotel is a beautiful place. It spreads its arms and embraces you when you visit, and you can feel the warmth of its soul from everything and everyone around.

The reception’s roof is made of makuti and the whole area is littered with comfy couches and coffee tables so you can sit in luxury, sipping a glass of juice, as you wait for either your room to be ready or for your taxi to pick you up. The receptionists are all smiling, eager to be helpful.

The Girl and The Snakes

Until a few days ago, the National Museum of Kenya was nothing but a landmark to me. I did not really think it was a place I needed to visit until I mentioned my fear of snakes to a friend and she said, “You know to conquer your fear you have to face your fear, right?” and I said, “Right,” and she said, “Well, we are visiting the Snake Park at the National Museum,” and I said, “Uhm, I am pretty sure the Bible was very clear on the kind of relationship we should have with snakes. We stay out of their way and they stay out of our way.”

But she was persuasive, so I said, “Let’s pick a date,” and we chose the coming weekend, which was around four days away.

The Peace Memorial Museum

Among the 218 people that lost their lives during the August 7th, 1998 bombing of the US Embassy in Nairobi were seven women all named Margaret. These are women that probably did not know of each other and did not know they were going to suffer the same fate, but they did, and now their names occupy the top row on one of the boards listing all the victims that succumbed, and when you read their names the rhyme is not lost on you, almost as if these innocent women never want you to forget their names, and I promise you, you won’t.

How Will You Spend Your Christmas?

For a long time now Christmas has been flying under the radar. Little excitement, few lit Christmas trees, boring Christmas songs and, worse, chapati made with carrots. You know it’s an end of an era when chapati, the king and queen of the Christmas menu, is disrespected like that. But you know what? Other than COVID bringing the world to its knees, I have a feeling it has also awakened the Christmas spirit in us and this year’s Christmas is going to be celebrated the way Christmas is supposed to be celebrated. So, just in case you need ideas, here are some.

The Dry Tears of The Crying Stone of Ilesi

One wonders if the tears of the famous Crying Stone of Ilesi are crocodile tears. If they are genuine, why hasn’t anybody bothered to find out why the stone is crying? It’s disturbing that every day children are born in Kakamega, go to school and eventually join the family business (Musalia and Sons Boda-Boda Enterprise), and go on to get married without stopping to ask, “Wait, why is our famous stone crying? Is it something our ancestors did?” My suspicion is the stone cries because something heinous was done to a chicken back in the days, and this chicken was reincarnated as a stone. Since being a stone is not enough, it decided to have a head resembling that of a human and finished the ensemble with tears (which means this chicken was a chic), hoping to grab attention and force the people to avenge her death, but the people of Kakamega would rather cheer at bulls fighting while high on weed than avenge a chicken.

The Coughing Bus

I needed to pee. Sitting upright on the bed, I stretched my arm and tapped my brother on the shoulder because I could not venture outside on my own. I was only a kid, in class five, to be precise, and if you know anything about pit latrines in the village is that they are usually located on the other end of the fence, far away from the main house. And to make matters worse, they are built facing the hedge which would act as the door. This made visiting the toilet at night a very dangerous affair. But I needed to pee.

My brother did not stir. I tapped him again and again and again but he remained stiff because he was tired of me and my abnormal desire to pee after every two minutes. And also, he most likely knew that my waking up had nothing to do with pee but everything to do with my unreasonable fear that the bus to Webuye would leave without me if I so much as entertained sleep even for a minute.

A Word For Travelers Over COVID-19

By now you already know the world is singing the same Anthem, and that is Corona Virus. Unfortunately, it’s not a beautiful anthem. It’s not an anthem you sing with a hand on your chest and tear of joy in your eyes. It’s not an anthem that fills you with positive energy or a sense of patriotism because Corona has not only turned our lives upside down, but it’s also taking lives. Lives have been affected and travel lovers all over the world can only dream about their dream destinations because we are all being encouraged to stay home and flatten the curve. What do you need to know or do as a travel lover?

Stay Home
This is not something you want to hear because your equilibrium is not balanced if the only trip you are taking is a trip to the kitchen to open the fridge, stick your head in it and come out with nothing. But right now staying home is our best bet of not only flattening the curve but living to travel another day.

5 Reasons You Should Travel More in 2020

You know how you’ll always believe your mother is the best cook until you taste someone else’s cooking? It’s the same when you don’t travel. Until you jump on a bus, board a train or aeroplane to a new destination and experience new things, you’ll never see the world with a third eye. So, here are five reasons why you should travel more in 2020.

Appreciate Different Cultures

We are a product of our surroundings. We believe in things we believe in because of where we were born and brought up, and so it’s different to understand why others live their life differently or eat different food until we live a moment in their shoe. Perhaps a few days in China and you will no longer turn your nose up at the thought of having frogs for dinner.
